Dennis Bulhões holds the title of "XI Batuka! Master" after winning first place in Brazil's most prestigious international drum contest, Batuka! Brasil, 2010. Born and raised in Brazil's northeastern city of João Pessoa, Bulhões started his formal music education at the age of seven, attending class at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). He continued his studies at the university in classical percussion with professor Francisco Xavier, obtaining his Bachelor of Music in 2009. He has also studied privately and attended workshop/clinics with Glauco Andrezza, Carlos Balla, Marcio Bahia, Kiko Freitas, Edu Ribeiro, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Peter Erskine, Ari Hoenig, Ian Froman, Donald Edwards, Dennis Mackrel, Dafnis Prieto, Antonio Sanchez, Greg Hutchinson, Jeff Hamilton and Jeff “Tain” Watts. Shortly after earning his Bachelor of Music, Dennis won the 2009 public contest of Technical Musician at the Federal University of Paraíba, where he currently holds the position as the universities professional performing percussionist/drummer and teaches the music extension courses. Among other awards, Bulhões took first place in the Odery and Modern Drummer Festival's regional contest, going on to place as a national semifinalist in 2008.
Bulhões has performed with several artists in Brazil, Europe and Africa including Sivuca, Maria Creuza, Marinês, Lucy Alves, Ney Conceição, Toninho Ferragute, Cezzinha, Radegundis Tavares, Antonio China, Clã Brasil, Glória Gadelha, Eli-Eri Moura, Luizinho Calíxto, Zé Calíxto, Zé Filho,Jubileu Filho, Radegundis Feitosa, Grupo Brassil, Paraiba Symphony Orchestra, Carl Winter (Denmark), Jimmi Roger Penderson, (Denmark), Li Gaoyang (China), Toll Bi(Senegal), Patrice Gomis( France). In 2014, Dennis Bulhões moved to NY to pursue a Master in Jazz Studies at Queens College, since his arrival, Bulhões has being involved with different artists and groups, playing and sharing the stage with names like: Eliano Braz (Felipe Hostins, Vitor Gonçalves, Itaiguara Brandão); Davi Vieira (Ze Grey, Richard Bona); Shota Lee (Lorin Cohen, Takuya Kuroda, David Smith, Josh Deutsch); Brian Drye (Rob Curto, Scott kettner, Mike McGinnis), Lívio de Almeida ( Eduardo Belo, Hélio Alves, Dave Pietro), and Terra Symphony Orchestra to name a few. Still in 2014, Bulhões went on tour in New York and Massachusetts with Brazilian TV actress and singer Lucy Alves, This same tour was award “the best Brazilian show on tour” by The Brazilian Press Award in United States. Dennis has been featured in several recordings including, "Sivuca - Poeta do Som", “Brassil Interpreta Compositores da Paraíba”, “Ze Manuel” among others.
In conjunction with his university position, Bulhões is frequently invited to direct workshops, give lectures, and perform as a guest artist. He has presented lectures and performances of Brazilian music in United States, Europe, Africa and Brazil.
